The most common mistake: choosing only steady-state cardio (treadmill, elliptical) because it burns more calories during the session, while ignoring that it does not build muscle and has minimal EPOC. Strength Training for Weight Loss: What Beginners Get Wrong

Most beginners skip weights and go straight to cardio because lifting feels intimidating and cardio feels productive. This is the single biggest programming error in fat-loss training.

  • Too light, too many reps. Using 5-pound dumbbells for 30 reps does not build muscle. The muscle fiber recruitment needed for metabolic impact requires sets taken close to failure at 8–15 rep range with appropriate load.

Caution: HIIT more than 3 times per week without adequate recovery leads to elevated cortisol, disrupted sleep, and actually slows fat loss. Two sessions per week is optimal for most adults.

Cardio for Fat Loss: Zone 2 Is Underrated

Zone 2 cardio (roughly 60–70% of max heart rate, or about 120–140 bpm for a 35-year-old) has become more prominent in sports science discussions over the past several years. It trains mitochondrial efficiency — the body's ability to oxidize fat as a fuel source.

Zone 2 works best as a complement to strength training and HIIT, not as a replacement. A well-designed fat-loss program uses all three.

Is it better to do cardio before or after weights for fat loss?
